Edito's Notes
- ↑ Why 1963? As A. Rotstein writes in August 1957, “Terry is working on an article that P. wrote in 1945” [W. Notes XIV] and, in December 1957, “P. (…) is getting something into shape he did ten years ago” [W. Notes XIX], we can suppose that “The Role of Strain in Institutional Change” is the 1945 text, maybe with a fragment of an introduction found in 19/20, trace of a second version Polanyi wanted to write. Actually, after he had write “The Role of Strain in Institutional Change”, Polanyi seems having not been satisfied by it and he begun to write it. “Psychology and Ideology” would have been this project worked again from Summer 1957 to the end of the year, with the help of 'Terry' Hopkins.
- ↑ We have all reasons to think that the first text is from Polanyi alone and the second one, Polanyi with the help Terence B. Hopkins, since A. Rotstein writes in September 1957: “P. worked hard in New York on the sociology paper with Terry. It is a real sociology of ideology and has much relevance to institutional sociology” [W. Notes XV], and in December 1957: “P. will have something published soon on sociology (…) on the question of institutional change and how strain causes change.” [W. Notes XIX]
