2.1.2. Views on the place of the economic system in society from Montesquieu to Max Weber
To establish the study of general economic history on the foundations of adequate method, it is necessary to safeguard against the unconscious influence of definitions developed in the field of economic analysis.
It will be found useful, therefore, to give a bird's eye view of the history of economics from Montesquieu and the Physiocrats to Marx, Menger, and Max Weber. We are taking here the term “economics” in the broadest sense, in which the study of economic institutions as well as that of the laws governing the price … […]
We will list the chief thinkers according to our main viewpoint in roughly five chronologically overlaping groups:
