… And now, for another problem. Of course, it's always a question whether to share my problems with you or to spare you! And so I have debated the matter. But I am in need pf your advice - to say nothing of the consolation of talking it over with you and Ilona. I have some reason to believe that I may not escape the congressional inquiries this session as, for a while, I thought I might. [1] There is nothing definite, straws in the wind merely, but I have decided it is foolish to be unprepared. It is not a question of my basic attitude, of course - it will be a decided pleasure to spit in their face, however discreetly. But it is a question of tactics, and while I should like to take a completely independent line, not even availing myself of a lawyer, still I must find out what legal questions are involved in invoking the 5th Amendement or not doing so. On this point I am not clear. The Columbia Chapter of the AAUP announced that certain members of the Law Faculty have offered to confer with Col. teachers who want advice on the matter, and think I should proceed thru this channel. I haven't taken any steps until now since I didn't want to call attention to my situation unless it became necessary. Now, if I consult a member of the Law Faculty, which one shall it be? (I have enclosed the statement listing their names - will you return it to me?) Of course, it may boil down to a question of who is in town and available - but I should like to know something about these men, and if you know anything of them it would be a help.

Is there anything else you would suggest? I should like very much to talk with MacIver before doing anything, but that may be going too high - please tell me what you think about it. I think I should not take the matter up at Barnard unless I am subpoenaed.

What a stupid waste of time! But your advice will be a great comfort. And isn't Einstein something to hug to your heart on a cold night?

  1. At the margin: Imagine! me of all people! They certainly must be {seraping} the bottom of the barrel.
